How do your genetics impact your health and wellness journey?

One of the principles of naturopathic medicine is to treat the whole person through individualized treatment.  What is more individualized than our genetics??

Here at Perceptive Health, we can use your genetic data from 23AndMe or Ancestry.ca to uncover the relationship between your genetics, nutrition and overall wellness.  By understanding your genetics, we can make practical lifestyle and nutritional recommendations based on your individual needs!

The trait categories that we look can be seen in the photo below (this is the overview of my genetic report):

One of the categories I have found most useful is the vitamin, mineral and omega-3 section.  For example, I have some genetic polymorphisms in my ability to absorb and utilize vitamin B12 and vitamin D which means I require higher doses and more bioavailable forms of these nutrients.

Another area that I should consider preventative care for is my cardiovascular health.  According to my genetic report I have a higher sensitivity to salt intake and I do better with a lower saturated fat intake.  My HDL (“good cholesterol”) is lower which is concerning because HDL cholesterol is what protects from plaque formation in the arteries.  On a positive note, regular exercise will increase my HDL levels according to my genetics!

When it comes to genetics, knowledge is power.  There is a saying when it comes to genetics that your DNA loads the gun but your environment and lifestyle choices is what pulls the trigger.  Understanding our genes is important.  However, I think the most empowering part is recognizing that we can make the appropriate lifestyle and nutritional changes to optimize our individual health.

Have you done DNA testing through 23AndMe or Ancestry.ca and are interested in getting a more comprehensive health and wellness based genetic report?

I offer these consultations for free as part of a naturopathic visit.  Not only will I run the genetic report for you but you also have the support to go through the report and discuss the most appropriate recommendations based on your genetics.

If you are a new patient to myself, we can include it in the initial visit for no additional charge.

If you’re interested or have any further questions please give the clinic a call (250-286-3655) or email us (office@perceptivehealth.ca).
